How To Help:
Dear Friends and Neighbors
For 80 years, the Oak Ridge Pool has been more than just a place to swim; it has been a gathering place, a source of cherished memories, and a symbol of our community’s resilience. Yet, despite years of warnings, detailed reports, and community concern, the city has failed to take the necessary actions to maintain and preserve this iconic facility. As stewards of this public asset, the city is expected to uphold a duty of care that ensures the pool’s safety, functionality, and long-term viability. However, instead of proactive maintenance and timely repairs, the city’s inaction has allowed preventable issues to escalate into major problems.
From unaddressed water loss to delayed inspections, the city’s hesitation to act has not only compromised the structural integrity of the pool but also neglected the community’s interest in preserving a vital piece of our shared history. By failing to create and implement a clear plan for the pool’s maintenance, despite knowing the extent of its issues, the city has allowed a once-thriving recreational space to become a symbol of neglect.
We firmly believe that the most responsible path forward is through thoughtful remediation, not a costly and unnecessary replacement. By investing in the restoration of our historic pool, we can maintain its unique character, preserve its place in our hearts, and be fiscally responsible stewards of our community’s resources.
Your voice matters in this crucial conversation. Whether you have fond memories of swimming in the pool, have marveled at its beauty, or simply believe in the importance of preserving our shared history, we need your support. Join us in attending community meetings, messaging city council, and spreading the word about the significance of the Oak Ridge Pool.
Together, we can ensure that the “Big Pool” remains a vibrant part of our community’s story. Let us unite in our commitment to protecting this irreplaceable treasure and forge a future that celebrates our past while embracing responsible stewardship.
It is time for the city to acknowledge its role in the pool’s decline and take swift, decisive action to correct course and ensure a sustainable future for the Oak Ridge Outdoor Pool. We remain deeply committed to preserving this historic landmark and engaging the community in the process.
With gratitude and hope,

The Big Pool
Constructing a massive pool in the middle of wartime was no easy feat. Materials were scarce, and the work was hard. But the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was up to the task and Oak Ridger’s were greeted by a true marvel – a vast, sparkling oasis in the midst of the secret city.
